Wine of the Week: McGuigan Shortlist Riesling 2010
We at team db want to celebrate the very best bottles from our Global Masters series. Every Wednesday, we select a wine that picked up either a Gold or Master from our competition series, and tell you why the judges loved it.
If we look at the results from our 2018 Global Riesling Masters, which we published in January this year, there is one country that dominates.
Normally, when we think of this versatile white grape, we think of Germany – to the extent that it is virtually assumed that all white wine from this country is made with this single grape.
But in our latest round of blind tastings we discovered Australia has become the most prevalent source of medal-winning Riesling, especially if you’re looking for something bone-dry.
The sole Master – our ultimate accolade – in the dry (dosage of 0-4g/l) category went to an older vintage, to McGuigan’s Shortlist Riesling from the 2010 harvest, proof that if you can cellar these dry whites, you will be rewarded with something with a touch more textural depth and complexity, as the wine develops some tertiary aromas, from wax to toast.
The judges loved the “lively” McGuigan, which had the hallmarks of a classic Riesling. From a nose with “really intense” lime and apple notes, to its complex, persistent and layered flavour profile, and the evidence of character development thanks to a few years of ageing, there was a lot that made this wine “lovely, and hard not to drink.”
