Penfolds celebrates 175th anniversary and Special Bin release
Australian wine producer Penfolds marked its 175th anniversary with a gala event at its “spiritual home” last week and has launched its first ever Clare and Barossa Valley blend in a rare ‘Special Bin’ release.
More than one hundred guests were invited to the evening’s celebrations at Magill Estate in South Australia last week for dinner in the cellar and later a fireworks display and party outside.
The event also marked the official release of the Special Bin 111A Clare Valley Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016, the first special bin release in almost a decade and the first Clare-Barossa blend as well.
Special Bins are only produced in exceptional years and from very particular parcels.
Peter Gago, Penfolds’ chief winemaker, said: “It was a privilege to celebrate Penfolds 175th Anniversary surrounded by guests from around the globe – at Magill Estate, where the Penfolds journey began all those years ago in 1844.
“This year of celebration has been filled with many significant moments – the launch of three 2012 Thiénot x Penfolds Champagnes, The Apothecaries 175th Dinner for European trade & media in London, tastings for Rewards of Patience (Ed VIII), and the release of The Penfolds Collection 2019, featuring a 100-point awarded Grange.
“The reveal of Special Bin 111A Clare Valley Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016 created a moment I’m sure will be remembered for years to come. We await the next 175 years – the journey continues, and it’s a privilege to witness its progression”.
